Social media - hindering or helping learning?

The answer is... It's complicated! Many teachers, and certainly many parents worry about the use of social media by our students.

“Educators have an important role to play in helping youth navigate networked publics and the information-rich environments that the internet supports...Although youth are always learning as they navigate these systems, adults—including parents, educators, and librarians—can support them further by helping turn their experience into knowledge.” (Boyd, 2014, p. 180)

For a greater insight into the role social media plays in teenage lives, take a look at Danah Boyd.'s book 'It's complicated' (amazingly) available to read for free online through Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 AU). Click on the book image to the right to be taken to Danah's site, where you can download the PDF.
